With Monday off and Shavuot this weekend, I wasn’t able to put in the time to do a proper newsletter, so I’m keeping it light with a little holiday/Jewish world roundup.
I realized I could spend the entire newsletter just asking the internet to share its thoughts on what exactly Shavuot is. Harvest holiday? Giving of the Torah? Conversion story? Cheesecake bingefest?
Like many of our customs, there are a lot of reasons and none of them are very clear. The custom of consuming dairy may have started as late as the 14th century. I like to think that the custom of eating cheesecake will be carried on by our descendants, who will hearken back to their ancestral memory of America.
Here is Seattle’s own Sharona Hassan with a little rundown.

For anyone who thinks Israel is the most controversial place in the world…they are right.
Israeli TV decided not to run a pro-vegan ad reminding the Jewish people that Shavuot is not really about cheesecake, but about a harvest of fruits and vegetables.
A little annoyed with myself that I didn’t come up with this one.
Oh, then there’s Megillat Ruth, which we read this holiday. Need an explainer?
Finding a partner is easier, thankfully, these days that it was for a Moabite widow during a famine. Or is it? I leave you with this.
Chag sameach and Shabbat shalom.

This Week Last Year
I am excited about this one, because last night I went to the Washington State Jewish Historical Society’s gala and release party for the second edition of Family of Strangers, an absolutely essential book for anyone interested in Seattle’s Jewish history. (Cool thing: I’m in it!) I do hope more people make an effort to understand the Central District and its significance to both Jewish and black communities.

Shoutouts
The publication that is the community resource, Family of Strangers, is available now on Amazon. We are thankful for this 2nd edition publication and for the authors — original and new that have made this possible to preserve our state’s Jewish history. Thanks, the WSJHS
