What’s The Cholent?
The Cholent is a hot mess of Seattle-based Jewish news, interviews, shoutouts, and musings.
What is this thing, Substack?
Loads of journalists are jumping from established outlets over to newsletters, where they can write independently with no overhead and speak directly to their audience.
Jewish journalism has been dying a long, slow death. Then Covid burst into the room and punched it in the face. In Seattle, the JTNews folded in 2015 after 90 years of ups and downs. Its successor, Jewish in Seattle magazine, is on hiatus as the entire publishing industry tries to find its way out of the pandemic. The Cholent strives to fill this void. While it won’t be the same as a big inky-smelling print paper or beautifully designed magazine, it will aim to tell stories that you care about and attempt to bring our community together. At the very least, everyone can unite around something new to complain about.

What can I expect?
The Cholent strives to be a weekly source for in-depth interviews, local reporting, analysis, and commentary. We’ll span the arts, culture, food, politics, health, and local and global issues as they pertain to our little Jewish corner of the planet.
